you should play with what you like...i USED to think controllers for this type of game was a bad idea from what ive played of Terraria on console....hated it...ive recently given it another shot and gotten used to the controller...its actually a pretty good way to play...the only thing i found inferior with the controller was using ranged weapons and placing blocks...it can be done easily enough with a controller but the mouse is just better for precision

I don`t think it even has controller support yet. I don`t even think it`s planned.

Mouse is going to be the best controller for this game.

Problem is, unless the game -supports- controllers, certain aspects will be very difficult to manage. The Controller Stick is no match to a Mouse Cursor, unless the game specifically supports this.

It's a 2D Platformer, so of course it will handle well on a controller, however the game allows you to aim freely with the mouse, which is not so great for a controller. For a smooth experience, you would want a control layout to allow you to shoot in 8 directions, and then controller players could work around that.

However the other side of things that makes the game bad for controller design, is wanting to place blocks. Again, the controller thumb sticks aren't a good match for using a mouse to move the cursor, even with 3rd party programs.

To answer the OP: There's no Controller Support for Starbound yet, might not ever be. You can attempt to use 3rd Party programs, but I suspect that it will hinder your experience greatly.

true...even with the program you got nothing for mouse movement

i think it should be added... just to one-up terraria. i like both games but... starbound can add the option of terraria based controller support. click for precision placement/action is a good start. 'modifier' trigger for the ability to access all ten hotkeys (ABXY and modifier + ABXY) - OR multipurpose buttons e.g.modifier + D-pad directionals for open inventory/crafting systems no modifier for cycle hotkeys up and down .

They'll add it. Once they finish the game. Which is a ways away. They would have to restructure the UI because the current UI is designed for key 'n mouse. When they finish and start making ports for console is when you will see it happen. Doesn't necessarily mean they will provide that functionality with the PC version tho.

I'd say stick with your mouse. Digging out specific spots and navigating your inventory will be much less of a ball ache. Not to mention aiming your ranged weapon over great distances.

Damn I still wish this game had keybinding. The lack of tab=inventory is a crime against gamers. At the very least outside of MMOs.

I actually prefer I for Inventory, like oldschool/still most RPGs.

That being said, point is, Keybindings would be nice.

Stick with your mouse, a controller in Starbound (unlike some other games) would be quite clumsy as you need the more precise nature of a mouse to place blocks etc. While it could probably be done with a controller you're likely to be able to place things where you want them more quickly with a mouse over a controller.

I too wish they would put in keybindings already, even if it's just an .ini or .config file that I need to change them in as I've lost far too many of my weapons when I fell into a deep pool of acid and accidentally hit my Q key, then died and near impossible to try to find that deep pool of acid again to retrieve the weapon. The first key that I'll change is the Q binding to something like the SHIFT+' keys to make sure theres no way in hell that I'll ever accidentally hit it.

I say play with whatever feels most comfortable and you have the most fun with. Just play it how you want rather than asking people what you should use.

I personally can't wait for controller support. Yes, they will do it for the PC version, they've already got a beta steam controller setup.
