Missing Iron Anvil from inventory

I have tried twice now to make the iron anvil. I got the ore, turned then into bars, then I went to the wooden crafting table and I clicked iron anvil, it took my bars but gave me nothing. What am I doing wrong?

There are two tabs for inventory. One should look like a clod of dirt to click on above the inventory slots themselves. Check there.

There or your hotbar up top, if it has any empty spaces a new item will automatically fill one up there.
