I can't craft pickaxes! D:
Suddenly, with the new update, when I logged into my main save file, I went to try to craft some pickaxes, and I couldn't! I tried the metal work station, crafting table, iron crafting table, and anvil! I NEED ANSWERS!

You can't craft pickaxes any more in the latest version.

You can find them in chests though.

Nope, the MM is great for mining. You can upgrade it many times to increase its power and area of effect.

You can also find drills in chests too, but like pickaxes, they wear out and can't be repaired anyway.

The MM is good at late game, yes, but the 2x2 basic version is dire, especially when lower down in the planet you'll be hitting materials that are very hard to harvest, even with the best MM upgrades. That, and you need core fragments which happen to reside in those tough materials.

@Brian

But to get the FTL working, you only need 20 core fragments. It doesn't take long to get those.

I started a new character after the 25 Aug patch and I honestly never struggled at any point. I even found a bit of diamond on the home planet. The MM was upgraded at every opportunity and mining was never a struggle.

It wasn't that sudden, I'm pretty sure this changed back in January or February. Regardless of when it was implemented the MM (and its upgrades) is a more lore friendly tool than pickaxes, and removes the need to perform repairs on your tool entirely. I suggest you get acquainted with the Starbound Wiki[starbounder.org].

Even with the final upgrade, if your trying to get through anything but the basic dirt/cobblestone it takes way to long.

Tried to mine through Magmarock yet? How about Direstone? Prepare to spend 15 minutes digging 2 screen lengths.

Only Obsidian, so far, which is quite tough.

But, the question is why would you want to go mining through all that stuff anyway?

Yeah, by the time you're mining that stuff often you'll have maxed or near maxed your MM anyway, unless you're some sort of masochist. Natural tunnel systems, especially when you get deep enough to find Core Fragments, are more than enough to find the ore pockets you need.

ive maxed my MM, my ship, etc. i love digging around to find random stuff.

Or, perhaps i want those materials to build something with, but hell if im gonna spend a year mining enough to make a 20x20 room. Perhaps chucklefish should get their heads out of their rears and increase the strength of the MM more or drasticly reduce the health of those stone-tiers.

But surely, that's only a valid complaint if you want to make houses from Obsidian or whatever?

I can get 1000 cobblestone in a few minutes with the upgraded MM.

actually yes, i would like some obsidian. also whatever that stone is on moons that takes forever to break.

Actually I doubt you really do want it.

If Obsidian was as easy to mine as mud, would you still want it?

In fact why not make houses out of mud/dirt blocks if it's speed you want?
