Given that CF went totally silencefull until Xbox port testing, don't expect anything and you will be fine.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

This game was great but i think Chucklefish stopped working on it. There is still a modding community to keep the game alive.
Better to wait updates from OpenStarbound than CF, we don't want a bunch of mods broken from them. But just in case i save up all the mods i play from the workshop in googledrive if CF touch starbound pc in a future.

well thats because it is abandoned. has been for a while.
No, the developers consider it finished. And while it is indeed technically a finished product, it feels like they could've done so much more with it. But they don't care. They decided that they were done with it and moved on to other projects. Thankfully the modding community helps keep things fresh.

Starbound has a story and it tells it, with a solid foundation for mods to go nuts on. And it's been years. Short of making a sequel and merchandise, I don't think there's anything more that Team Chucklefish could do with the franchise.

would an update cause all steam workshop mods to end up unfavorited/unsubscribed?

Nope, most people wouldn't update their game if mods becomes incompatible.

In the time starbound when starbound was given updates, the mods always get broken with every oficial update, for those circumstances various mods got incompatibles or never more come back again. Unless the owner update his mod to make it compatible with the new version (Or someone else who take the mod to updated).

If starbound get some new update it gonna happen again, but this time higly probably we gonna get a 70% death workshop from people are not updating anymore their mods in years.

The only way to solve this is a way you will not like... means get the game in a solid version witouth steam, and port every mod from workshop in a folder to have it saved. But this is in a extreme case Chucklefish decide to update Starbound.

they gave up long before the game even went into open beta, the OG crowdfunders knew the game was gonna be a disaster when they nuked their original website
I couldn't care less if they added more content, the workshop's got that covered 1000-fold. I just wish they optimized the game first before abandoning it, since it still runs like ♥♥♥♥ on the beefiest PCs. Unless you're using Linux.
