How to Grow Cotton?

I'm trying to get the teddy bear, but whenever the cotton reaches level 2 of maturity, the ground below it becomes dry again, and when I try to pour water in that spot, the cotton falls down with nothing but the seed. Any help? What am I doing wrong?

Also, when it rains, the cotton falls down too. I believe I still need sunlight for it to grow but rain is making it impossible, and I probably can't grow them underground. Help?

What you need is for it not to flood. Make sure there's no blocks behind so that the excess rainwater drains away. So 1, till your ground with a hoe. Plant your seeds, water the ground with a watering can (or let it rain, but inside the rain doesn't reach, so use the watering bucket instead.) Every time the ground dries out, water it again. 3-4 dry cycles or so and you'll harvest some cotton.

Edit: Oh and I think you'll need to spin the cotton into balls of yarn. Not sure on that point though. If you do you'll need a spinning wheel.

you can grow anywhere with any light source, make sure it has enough room vertically to grow. i have my farm on my ship and cotton grows fine
