There's no map because the planets are a closed loop. Keep going in one direction, and you'll eventually end up where you were again. And your first play through should always be casual anyways, so you don't have to worry bout losing anything but pixels (and you lose 1/3 of them in casual). But there are mods for mini maps if you wish to use them. Devs decided the game was simple enough it wasn't needed (and I tend to agree with them on this point anyways).

Edit: re-inserted what I left out because I was distracted whilst typing.

Here is a little tip, once you have paint mode unlocked you can use it on underground background tiles to draw a rope so you know the path you took.
Usually for avoid this risks, i use torch tracks in case if i die.

If ya die on the surface, its no big deal. Just keep running in a direction and you'll eventually find your stuff.
Dying underground is a whole 'nother story...
Taking a bath in the core of a planet... that stuff is gone.

I like that it's still somewhat lenient that you do not drop EVERYTHING upon death. Just stuff that you can replace although at a cost through crafting/mining.

I'd go mad if i lose all my rare weapons and armor due to a dumb death.
Like it tends to happen to me in Terraria and Minecraft xD

Same if you have BYOS and fall below the bottom map.
Also there a bug with WEdit, if you interract with beds or chairs it will send below planet core.

Speaking of falling through. I noticed sometimes i fall through elevators when i activate them.

That's how i died on a Volcanic planet in the foundry mini biome.
Fell through the elevator as i activated it to go up and dived head first into the canyon below and to add salt to the wounds i messed up the double jump timing and didn't save myself from gravity.

Ther is a mod that may help:

If the biome is not linked to the planet bottom your items may be still here, at the bottom. You either empty the lava or use admin mode to safely take a lava bath.
Depending on how much lava there is and if it keep pouring from underground you can build a chimney.
You place blocks on background and on the foreground, then you remove blocks that aren't in contact with lava. You now have a basin allowing you to go deeper, rince and repeat untill you reach the bottom. I suggest to have some water inside to prevent accidents.
This what I do who I want to explore lava planets underground.

That's a troll mod, not an actual fix sadly.
It intentionally removes collison from all platforms so you can't even mount them.

Yea i found it too while i was looking up the problem and article mentioning the very mod and how it "works" popped up.

Even some comments on the mod page and discussions confirm it's a "joke" mod. And mention that this person specializes in joke mods.

The base is safer, the ship file can corrupt itself out of nowhere, its quite rare though.

you can use this mod for navigation and you can put pings down where you died (it's helped me out a lot when i am not using admin controls)

For the same reason mods that are a minimap are so slow. The game is so unoptimized that there was no way to have a map that would be properly useable unless your computer has a CPU way over the requirements.
