Building Colonies
So guys, are there any advantages to building colonies or is it just a big time-sink?
I noticed a couple barren lifeless planets which said in description, "perfect for large scale construction projects." I checked them out and they were relatively flat and lifeless.

So I'm just gonna build some kinda house and place a colony deed in it.
Does the colony deed get used up when the NPC spawns? Do I need more than one colony deed? Do colonists pay me some rent?

Colonists pay rent, and you need one deed per colonist.
This should help you out :) http://starbounder.org/Tenant

So harmless worlds produce low-rent colonists. I don't know, trying to place colonists on a world with meteor showers just doesn't seem like a good plan, but you'd get premium rent from such worlds. I'm guessing that colonists have suitable implants for such worlds.

I've had a colonist on a volcanic planet survive ok, so you don't have to worry about bio-implants. Weather however, I'm assuming to be dangerous. I'm yet to see a colonist get dissolved by acid rain, or see a meteor crash into their house, but if the colonist does die they will respawn, as long as the house is still ok. I guess you have to be lucky with meteors

So I found a size 4000 barren and lifeless world and started a harmless colony.
I got 2 floran villagers and 1 human merchant so far. Couldn't afford more than 3 deeds at this point and the housing is pretty basic. So far I've collected only crops for rent, meh.

I need 4 more upgrade modules for my last ship upgrade, seem to have found pretty many of those things in chests while exploring.

Edit: oh a floran just paid me 10 throwing daggers, lol.

Tenants give the best rewards at higher difficulties. In order to keep your tenants safe on a volcanic planet, for example, build their homes underground.

Its mainly a time sink though. Unless the you find the act of building colonies inerently satisfiying then don't bother.

at least for the moment.

Chuckle fish expressed thier interest in allowing game progression with colonies and farming...

They've already got procedural quests tied into the colony system, and they are working on a crew system that allows you to recruit colonists to your ship or to follow you around, providing buffs and combat support. I suggest you check out https://www.youtube.com/user/ThatThunderCookie if you don't mind spoilers, he puts up videos every few days with changes from the nightly version showing off new content and mechanics Chucklefish is working on.

Yep they've given me quests to do, mainly colony building stuff.

So far I've built 8 colony houses and I've got one quest waiting to find Apex furnishings.

I put some colonists on a volcanic planet undergound housing, and they're not really paying me better than the harmless colonists. The only thing is I'll get nanowrap bandages instead of bandages. The tenants rarely pay with pixels, and the harmless colonists pay up to 300 pixels.

Not really much entertainment value for end-game content.

I built a big farm, I think that farming is marginally improved over what it was originally. The crops grow relatively quickly once they've been watered. Since they removed hunger as a survival mechanic, the only reason to cook and eat is for the buffs. Some food buffs are pretty good, but I liked the hunger mechanic.

I could repeat the boss fights, but there's no unique rewards for doing that it seems.

The main thing they've added to the game in the past 3 years that I see as an improvement is the upgradeable ships.

The older style boss fights with unique drops were almost better than the missions they have now. The only problem is the old boss fights could be made pretty trivial with a little preparation.

The Pickaxes and Drills seem pretty useless now since they wear out so quickly and can't be repaired. Once you get the M.M. upgraded that's all you really need. The Wiring and Painting tools need to have some kinda upgrade requirements too I think; I have a big stack of excess manipulator modules left over.

The hoverbike kinda sucks on hilly terrain, it needs to fly a bit higher and handle hills better.

And why is Aegisalt Rifle better than Ferozium Rifle?

Looks like you put a lot of effort into that building mate.
There is a mod wich makes tenants only pay with pixels.
