If that's the latter, I may not be able to respond, because I only played 3 versions in total of the game. The very beginning until the outpost appearance, then one point were some decors (Where the main story of the game were explained, but at the time there wasn't any story implemented) were added, and finally the 1.00 release of Starbound.
You can get quests where a npc asks for something like crops and gives seeds, you present it and they teach you the recipie to make the item they want. Or they ask for some foods and give you the recipie to make what they want with the foods.
