NPCs and teleporters

So ive noticed that colonists are able to use teleporters that the player places but since i ever just place one near whatever im building, they just end up teleporting back to their rooms.

My question is this, if theres more than one teleporter on the planet can the NPCs use these to travel to each teleporter and does distance even matter? Id rather not waste pixels testing this if somebody already knows.

from what I know, I don't think it does. Every time I see them use a teleporter, they just appear a few blocks away from where they teleported from. I just think it's odd.
