Mine some trees until they die and you can get some wooden logs.
Press C, and use the afforementioned menu to craft Timber (the cost being those wooden logs you collected).
Press I to open your inventory, in your inventory, go to the block tab (I think it's the second one?), in there, left click your desired building material "block" (timber is a good one).
After left clicking the block type it will be attached to your cursor, move it to a slot in your hotbar, or move your inventory out of the way without closing it.
With blocks selected (either hotbar or attached to the cursor, both work), left click in the game world to place blocks, right click to place blocks into the background.
You can left click hotbar slots to select them, or use number keys 1 through 6. Press X to access a second set of hotbar slots. Right clicking an item in the hotbar slot will remove it completely, leaving an empty slot.
I hope this helps.
EDIT: You have 900 hrs on Starbound O_O
Yes, I have 900 hours. And I tried to minimize idle time (I did fall asleep a couple of times though).
I'm one of the kickstarter backers, so I had a little more time to play it. :P
