Grass Regrowth / Biome Regeneration
As the title implies this thread is about grass regrowth and biome regeneration. I don’t know if I’m an idiot or if I just have a bad world but grass does not regrow on my home planet.

I’m kind of surprised that this feature has still yet to be implemented into this game when the developers said they were going to do so a long time ago. After doing much research I’ve found that the only way to get grass to regrow is to buy the bags of it at the Terramart vendor, till the ground, water it, and then manual plant each few seeds. And even with all of this effort it still won’t spread or regrow if something were to happen. Same thing goes for flowers and the like. That’s a real pain in the ♥♥♥!

The threads I’ve found on this subject date back to around 2014-2015 so I decided to make a new thread to try and raise awareness on the issue and, if possible, try to get it fixed. I hate looking at mounds of dirt instead of grassy green hills. So if the devs are out there, or hell if a modder is out there reading this thread, please add/make a regrowth and regeneration feature for Starbound.

Any discussion on the topic is much appreciated! Thanks! :ale:

You want the fps to drop a bit more for grass? Because thats what will probably happen if each dirt tile needs to check if it should regrow grass reguarly one would assume.

I mean you can buy livestock for plant matter and they could add trees that drop any kind of petals. There are sprinklers too for easy farm watering.

No offense but what are your system specs? You shouldn’t have any FPS drop in this game right now, let alone if they enabled grass to regrow. Terraria and Minecraft are both games able to have grass regrow without any issues and seeing as how the devs originally planned for it to be that way in the game anyways I don’t think it should be a problem.

One would assume the developers could probably code it so that the game only checks blocks within a 50 block radius of the player. That way people playing on minimum specs wouldn't be lagging like crazy, one would assume.

Well thing is Terraria you are basically one world and limited by it, so things need to regrow. In minecraft moving bases can be very time consuming and patches without grass stand out strongly, plus the animals like sheep eat the grass.

But in starbound planets are really throw away. You use one and move on to the next. The best planets for loot, moons. The best planets for FPS barren have no grass. Deserts have none or little, ocean planets are sand and water, frozen are ice and snow, volcanic are mostly rock and dry dirt.

So grass growing on its own seems to help such a minority of situations, most likely a player picking to settle on a non optimal planet. Such as settling on a mutated or a lush planet.

So why does grass deserve to self grow when its mainly going to affect a narrow area of the game? You don't need grass for most anything you can't easily get else where.

But like say terraria its important because its how you get more bait and terraria uses a spreading biome system as a large part of its gameplay. Theres not really a game play reason you need grass to spread in starbound.

Grass well used to be more important in minecraft. It used to allow frequently non hostile animal spawns before animal breeding was a thing. It was funny, you'd get a grass floor in your house and might get cows spawning inside your house. No grass, no animal spawns. Not so in starbound since you buy your passive livestock.

So you see In minecraft grass was tied into how you got food. But in starbound you can just buy it. Canned food is amazing in SB.

If your living on a lush or mutated planet aren't you like the care taker? What are you doing that keeps killing the grass making you need to replant it all the time?

Grass should regrow in Starbound for aesthetic reasons.

Both Terraria and Minecraft used to not have any good reason to plant grass or have grass regrow. There used to be no benefit or purpose for it too, but it did. There could be all kinds of benefits for having grass regrow in Starbound if they wanted to do so. But the main reason for having grass, flowers, and other vegetation comeback is because we are used to seeing that in real life and for aesthetic purposes.

I really shouldn’t have to do all this busy work unless I am in a barren place where grass and other vegetation would not naturally grow. It makes sense for grass to regrow by itself without all that tedious and redundant interaction on the players part.

Old thread, but it seems the devs and the community is more active in Reddit and its own forum. You might want to suggest it there.

This is a good idea that I agree with btw, it's for aesthetic reason.
