Fossil advice?
I don't have a lot of experience underground, so I've encountered few fossils. The wiki page doesn't reveal much, either, about how fossils are distributed.

I'm wondering if there's a good strategy to finding them efficiently. It'd be nice to know things like:
A) can they be covered by the foreground blocks, or should I just focus on caves and visible background?
B) can they spawn at any height? do I need to look in the "mountains" as well?
C) are there certain fossil "tables" for different biomes? Or can I get them all just by focusing on easy planets? Barren planets?

I pretty much went through the game just circumnavigating the surface of planets. There are fewer and fewer things left to do now that the story is done, and fossil hunting has become the most desirable thing to do. I just don't want to waste my precious time doing something that is pointless, like mining up a barren world if barren worlds never have fossils.

A) you can only find them in caves
B) i have not seen any spawn in mountains or near the surface so id assume they have a max spawn height.
C) yeah you can just farm for fossils on easy planets and still get trex fossils, or just the common egg
I think they are more abundant in ''tar'' biomes.

A) Never covered
B) Min and Max it seems. never seem them at the bottom. And they spawn a bit down below the surface
C) It is all the same.
When completing the mini-game you have 40% chance to get a small fossil, 35% to get a medium and 25% to get a large one.

Thanks. It would seem that there are no caves on barren planets at all. It's still going to be tricky getting a feel for the best depth on other planets. I assume the size of the planet refers more to its radius surface-to-core.

And while the game may not cover them naturally, I suspect that falling blocks like sand could be a nuissance. Not sure if I really want to try looking on deserts and such.
Best I can tell you is that they've been easier for me to find in the underground on desert planets or in desert-y undergrounds elsewhere. Prepare to be patient because it's hard. I've yet to SUCCESSFULLY excavate any.
