Ship Base:
PROS:
+Keeping Everything Private
+No Chance of others finding it without your permission
CONS:
-Takes a while to get to decent size
-Difficult to trade items between characters
Surface Base:
PROS:
+Can be as big as the planet itself
+Great spots for mining and farming if you choose a good planet
+Great way to create storage facilities for all characters on your PC
CONS:
-Doing this slightly increases chances of being found by others
If your playing hardcore with friends a ship base can be better since if you die they can warp to your ship, grab everything, then give it to your next character.
Large ships can lag, sure some planets can lag too but you avoid bases on those.
A planet base is free, ship upgrades cost a ton of money, bunch of diamonds, or lots of questing time for EVERY character.
Colonists on ships can be unreasonable with thier build more homes requests and pay low since threat levels on ships are low. However ship merchants with things like yellow stims can easily be used by anyone in your party if they warp to your ship.
Hoverbikes and boat do not work well in the spaceship. Its easy for the hoverbike to get stuck in the teleporter room too lol.
Heres one important tidbit however... If you decide to make your ship your primary base, you can take it with you anywhere, even into multiplayer servers, making it a much more traveling-oriented base/ship which (instead of constantly traveling back to a "home world") you can indeed simply beam up into your ship and do whatever you needest be done.
~With that said, theres also a downside to creating a base within your ship. Depending on your race, your room space is limited, and you are unable to control the maximum large-ness of your vessels home.
Not to mention...
Down to the meat of base building, however...
At the beginning of a character, it is crucial that- instead of focusing on "ship-expansions" you should instead create a started home base on your beginning planet, idealy having crops, and many-a-storage containers so you can put all of your (depending on difficulty) dropables into.
Really, the only time that you can start benefitting by moving all of your items into your ship is when you upgrade its size once, or twice.
In summary- A "ship-base" is much more beneficial to you, however, at the start, you'll want to make a small base that you'll be able to pack up once you've gotten the resources to be able to make an ideal ship-base.
