EDIT: Maybe i'm just getting burnt out with mining-sandbox stuff. *sigh*
Either go mine and get all the resources yourself, or buy them at inflated prices.
I got through the game by looting everything I found, selling it at travelling merchants for mad pixels and then stocking up on metals I needed. Never bothered mining much because of a few reasons.
1 caverns are dangerous - though if you spend all your money buying metal you don't lose anything except time getting your medicines back.
2 they're difficult/time-consuming to navigate without a grapple or tech compared to just running across the surface
3 I never found a single cosmetic item or blueprint deep underground just generic loot
I did mine until I got the breathing EPP but after that I just bought the higher tier metals and mined copper/gold/silver from the asteroids, but only because it's so easy and wasting money to buy them.
What do you buy? A fully modded Matter Manipulator feels fine for basically everything...
And I have to say looting dungeons give you a lot of stuff as well, and pixel shortage is mostly not a problem. But even then I only buy from Ursa when I'm to lazy to go out and get the stuff myself. Same goes with batteries and other stuff you can buy at the infinite store at the outpost.
