Should be super common on the starting planet, look for the grayish looking blocks.

jungle, forest, or any planet there is water... It is everywhere... I see it in lots of places. Swamp biome would be a good place to look as well... Although each sub-biome only has a chance to spawn. Reason why I suggest the planet types I did.

This happened to me to if you can't find mud on your world the problem is that it just didn't spawn. On my first world i looked for mud EVERYWHERE and never found it. Then i started up a new world and found it instantly.

Don't be afraid to bookmark where you are and hop a planet or two over. I tend to find the stuff all over in flower biomes on forest planets.

Looks like you got unlucky with your starting planet. Fortunately, stuff that is crafted using mud (that is, the furnace) is not explicitly mandatory for progression until you have exhausted all planets in your starting stellar system (you need the furnace to create the metal bars needed for a backpack that lets you mine starship fuel on moons).

For now, you will have to collect Core Fragments and progress your initial main quests without benefiting from armor (stay at range and use thrown weapons for best chances of survival). Once your ship is repaired, then you can try your luck with the other planets. If there aren't any other Lush planets, a Forest planet is your second-best option.

On some lush planets, you can find more mud beneath the surface than above it, particularly if you are in a wet area underground or sometimes for no reason at all. I've been on a starter planet where all the mud I found was about half-way down, with little on the surface that I noticed.

This is a strange game, biome-wise. I'm sure there are logical reasons for mud appearing near the planet core, where it is quite toasty, but I'll be hanged if I can think of one.
