That being said, I find it a bit hard to compare the two, similar to comparing something like COD being compared against CS:GO, sure they're FPS', but they are two different worlds.
Starbound is, in my opinion, a more casual, relaxing game
Terraria, while relaxing in it's own rights, is harsh in the beginning, and I prefer most of it's aesthetic choices.
To end it off, I think they're both great games, Terraria's just finished.
I've never played Terraria so I can't really say. But I have played Starbound off and on, for years and I like it a lot. But, I'm an explorer type, the game really was designed for me.
If you already own Terraria I would only buy Starbound if you're really into building stuff and other wacky mini-games/side diversions that have absolutely nothing to do with progressing your character.
Starbound offers about a 15-20ish hour single player campaign with bosses you don't farm (they have no loot tables) and extremely poor itemization compared to Terraria.
