Can't fix Protectorate sword

After doing the glitch quest, I speak to the glitch that can repair the Protectorate sword, but he just gives the dialogue about how he can "mend broken Protectorate weapons". I repaired a sword on my previous character, but I've been unable to repair a second sword, even on that character.

I got the same thing, you might need to progress a bit more in the stroy, if not finish it.

Yeah, I was thinking that maybe I have to progress past the glitch quest in order to actually repair; though it seems a bit strange since I can do the gladiator challenge for the floran.

well until you find out you could just spawn in the fixed one and delete 10 tech cards and the broken sword

There are two prerequisites for the quest to repair the Broken Broadsword:

1. The current character must have completed Fetch the Glitch Artifact. (You can check completed missions in your Quest Log.)
   
2. The current character must be carrying the Broken Broadsword when they talk to the Baron at the Outpost.

You do not need to complete any main quests after Fetch the Glitch Artifact to start The Hero's Forge (the quest to repair the Broken Broadsword).

The very first broadsword you get, Broken Broadsword, can be used in a quest much later in the game. Basically you can upgrade it into a really decent weapon.

These fine folk are discussing WHEN you can acquire and complete this quest. The character joins the Outpost very late in the story quests, and this discussion seems to say that you might even need to beat the story boss before being able to do the quest. That, or you just need to have the broadsword on you.

If you're like me, and threw out this diamond ages ago, you can get another copy without too much trouble.

1. Create a new character, play for a while until you've gotten to the outpost and beaten the facility mission.
2. Go to your ship, write down the coordinates of your new character's planet
3. Place a chest near the beam down point of that planet. Put the Broken Broadsword into the chest, save+quit.
4. Hop onto your totally awesome character, drive your ship over to the coordinates of your new character. Beam down, see the chest your other character left, see the broadsword inside
5. Presto, you now have undone the horrible mistake you made by selling or trashing this priceless piece of trash item.
6. You've also learned that all your characters share the same universe, and can visit each other's places.
