For food you gotta make a hoe, take the hoe grind the soil with the hoe, plant the seed water it down and harvest your plants.
The easiest way to get food is to hunt it. For hunting you'll need at least hunting spears. To make those, you need an Inventors Table with which you can craft a Forgaing Table with which you can craft the spears.
Of course you'll also need a camp fire to cook the meat you hunt...
If you search your starting planet you'll find a variety of crops. Some can be harvested simply by pressing the Action key when hovered over them. Some require you to use the Matter Manipulator to pull the plant out of the ground (thus obtaining a seed). Be sure to check your food inventory section to see if you actually got the seedling when you try to pick up a plant. Also, watch closely, some plants are very small and easy to miss (rice being the key example).
Once you've got seedings, you'll need a Hoe and a Watering Can. You'll need Copper for each. There's enough time to search the planet, gather the materials needed to build a Hoe and a Watering Can and start farming before you run out of canned food.
