Crewmembers death

Hi all
1.0 just launched so there is a lot of new things around
i found 2 crewmembers and i would be glad to bring them on mission BUT i have a question:
they can die?
what happens if they die? they respawn at your ship, at your side, or are lost forever?

can you heal them like giving them some food or like?

Yes, they go back to the ship full health

They respawn at your ship. I am unsure if they heal on their own, or if you need to heal them.
As a method of healing, I've been using a staff that has a healing field as a secondary.
