Food in Starbound
hey guys. I'm looking for some help with food in this game. Looking at the starboudner wiki its terribly outdated after the game went into release.

So far i've basicly been living off of chokolate. I'm later in the game now and i want to focus mainly on one type of food.

Growth time and hunger gain is the only thing that matters to me atm. Buffs are not important at this point.

What do you guys recommend?

I've just switched over to carrot bread but i'm not sure if its even good for hunger at all

potatos
Small crop size
Fast grow time
Extremely long spoil time
3x baked potato in a camp fire will fill you up

Alternatively Rice
Uncooked has no spoil time
No spoil time means it will stack
Not as effective as potatoes

pearlpeas and rice make pearlpea risotto which is quite efficient in growing time and growing space. Just dig up all the pearlpeas and rice plants on a couple of Lush planets - a half dozen of each is plenty - and just make sure they get watered. Whenever you need food, there'll be enough for like ten bowls, which is several refills of your food meter.

Yeah, I mostly make do with Pearlpea Risotto. It's pretty filling.

I always carry around a couple potatoes and a campfire for emergencies, though. And a few chocolate for small refills when I want constant regeneration.

Once you get more exotic things, Pineapple Juice and Jam make you faster and Kiwi Juice and Jam make you jump higher, so they make good snacks too.

I normally use rice or mushrooms.

Sorry to butt in with a question, but how do you harvest rice seeds? I've tried "diging them up" with the matter manipulator (which works for corn) but I get nothing back from rice. Do I just have to keep randomly harvesting until a seed drops?

You can dig them up, and you do get a seed. The rice plants are small though, maybe you just missed?

get carrot seeds from gentle lush planets, plant 10 carrots on your ship, cook alll the carrots, no more problems with food, none at all that i've had.

Just to clarify i'm not having problems with food per se. I just like min/maxing. At the moment there arent really a good place to look for what food gives most hunger and is easiest to make.

I also think the spoil time does factor in how much you get out of it. As I notice a big difference if I shoot a bird and cook the poultry directly and eat it directly gives me half the hunger bar back, but if I carry it around for a bit it only filles like 20%.

So I would say go for something that has a very long spoil timer and easy to make like someone already said rice/potato. I mostly moved over to cooked food for buffs and not the hunger specificly. If it is hunger that I need to solve I plop down a campfire and biol a few rice that do stack nicely when not cooked, as rice does also have no spoil time.

Mushroom normally stack and doesn't go bad at all. When needing food, just put down a bonfire and bake them.

If you don't want complex recipes or buffs, potatoes seem to be the best for pure hunger. I haven't seen any other single raw ingredient food fill up as much hunger as a baked/mashed potato yet, and even raw they fill up more hunger than most other simple foods.

I think most other crops are either less filling because they don't spoil in their raw state (wheat/rice), or are balanced around their other benefits (buffs). Potatoes have no buffs, they just fill you up a lot.

tatos a carrots are bassically the only food you ever really need unless you need buffs, the only buffs im concerned with are the blessings from the gaint avian.

The wiki does list "hunger" values. I don't know if it's up to date though:
