You can beat it in under 2 hours if the planet generator is on your side. Beyond that, it's what you make of it, same as with Terraria.

The time you will put in this game depends on what you will do, If youre just here for the main story it will be 10-15 hours unless you know exactly what do, but besides that you have mods, side quest and alot more even with that said you can even build amazing stuff anything from castles to a simple three house, you can play coop. This game honestly is definently worth 10 dollars
i played 9 hours an only progressed the main quest very little. The fun is in exploring ,building and the story ect. I see it as a big playground with lots to do.

Oh yeah there are also radiant quests, but there are only like three of them and they keep repeating (deliver this, kill this, rescue that, same as with Skyrim). Sometimes they reward you with crew members which don't serve any purpose other than blocking storage containers when you're trying to access them and allowing you to upgrade your ship without spending pixels (assuming you have enough upgrade modules, which you won't).

Supposedly, there are also side missions, but apart from Dreadwing I've yet to find any.

You can not "beat" a sandbox game.
How many hours you can have fun with the game depends on how much fun you can have with being creative in a game like this.

According to Steam, I beat the game in just over 27 hours. This time being from someone with almost 200 hours in the early access. Some of that, to be fair, was spent exploring questing and farming that's not necessary to the game but you're probably gonna have at least 15-20 hours of story and potentially infinite amounts of sandbox playtime.
