I captured an Adult Poptop. I haven't taken it to any high-end system, but it dealt 52 damage on contact, and it has a swipe that has a nice range.

I just got one of those while doing a mining trip, but wanted to see if there was something better

The pulpin does a surprising amount of dmg once you capture it.

Erchius ghost--OH WAIT YOU CAN'T DO THAT ANYMORE.

Klulex guardians are ok.

I enjoy the large flyers. they are unique and helpful. I found a dragon from the RNG :) All around best pet. I stick a healing collar 3 on mine. Theirs a great youtube video on pets: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lyTG2FttEHc

Large Flyers are varied and useful, but it might take a while until you find one that you like. (Prepare to build pillars to the outer atmosphere on dozens of planets :P , unless you have a mod with a flying vehicle)

Deformed Apex Experiements (the ones with the head tumor) are slow, but deal ridiculous extreme damage even without a Damage Collar, i'm not kidding!
Their attack rating is 179 by default, with a Damage Collar III, it's 260. Not even a player with end-game solarium separator armor can survive a single hit.

Kluex Sentries are quite good to when it comes to defend you while you do something (like building or excavating a fossil)

Nutmidges and Hemoglobins are kind of useful with explosive collars for obvious reasons :v

And like in the video says, Adult Poptops are good meatshields.

I never would have thought such an enemy would deal that much dmg. Thanks for the tip:steamhappy:

I thought their stats were all the same based off your armor. I captured a large flying monster roosting on top a glitch castle just because it looked cool and huge like an hour ago.

I've yet to try it out.

I prefer Mecharachnid and Mass Effect Shuttle for flying :P , it's easier to fly with them than with the Rho Mech (and it bugged once too and killed me for no reason <.<)

Yeah, i think that Damage and HP from the pets scales with your armor.
Eitherway, i have a Kluex Sentry with Damage 3 Collar and it deals 67 DMG, and the Apex Experiment with Damage 3 deals those devastating 260 DMG. (I wear Solarium Manipulator armour), so, there are different stats :P

I also find a Wisper from ice biomes to be pretty good. It's not very strong or tough, but it's an ice elemental (meaning its attack sometimes inflict Frost and slow enemies), it has ranged attacks (so it stays near me most of the time), is intangible (so it won't get stuck on anything), and gives off light like a Lumoth (not as good a light as a Lumoth, but still decent). I'd recommend using a Wisper for an explorer pet that stays nice throughout the game.

For a purely exploratory pet, a Lumoth with an oblivious collar is perfect. Gives off great light, is intangible, and hovers around you constantly. Just make sure to call Lumo back to its pod when you get near any hazardous liquids (like poison or lava) as it'll mindlessly fly through them, get poisoned/burned, and promptly die, leaving you alone in the dark. Thankfully, only a risk in less than a handful of biomes.

Large Fliers are big, beefy, and powerful, but you have to be mindful. I've encountered 2 so far, both of which have short-ranged beam attacks (like about a spear's length away from its head), one of which needs a second to charge the attack. Also, it's large size causes problems when delving into planets, so it may get caught on blocks or may not even be able to help if it can't teleport into a room big enough for it. So keep those things in mind.

Adult Poptops I highly recommend for combat pets. They may only be able to attack physically, but give them a healing collar and you have a big meatshield to absorb bullets. The downsides of this pet are that it is restricted to the ground, it's size (which is a plus for shielding but minus for manuverability), and it'll only really keep you safe from range attacks while limiting you to range attacks if you want to stay safe. Melee weapons tend to be a bit more damaging, so if someone gets past your AP, you'll effectively be caught with your pants down unless you have a melee weapon of your own fast handy. A highly effective defensive pet; just be mindful about how close the enemy gets to you.

Regarding Apex Mutant from lab biomes, they are probably THE hardest hitting pets in the game. And their health is decent, so if you throw them into the middle of a group of baddies like a grenade, it'll likely last until the end while one-shotting each foe with a damage collar. The only negative it that it's ugly (when it's mouth isn't open, the AP looks like a huge snuggly stuffed animal you could use as a bed) and it's very slow (meaning you'll want to get good at throwing that capture pod). So long as you think of it as a death-summoning grenade (and ignore any moral inquaries about keeping such a thing alive for your own benefit), it'll work perfectly.

As for Kluex Sentry, I never considered using them (didn't even know they could be petted), but I'd agree they'd probably make a good pet that would stay around you and shoot nearby hostiles with range attacks. Not having experience with these pets, I can't give details like I could for the other creatures, but it does not sound like a bad idea, so I'll probably try it out.

Completely forgot that this thread existed as it is now a year old. . . but still, thanks for the tip.

IMO best combat pet is Pteropod. He did only distance damage, hold up at one point when attack, so - best choise towards ground enemies and ever towards hostie NPCs!
*off topic* Hey guys, I can`t find Adult Poptops. I know that them will spawn in Jungle but I don`t seen them anymore else exept start planets. I need a tip:SBpanda:

The "mother" poptop unique that appears in the mines of lush planets will become an adult poptop once captured. So they're a good, reliable, easy to find source.
