How long do items stay on the ground after death?

Cause mine are gone it was only like 3 minutes... Can you change game modes after you started playing?

They are supposed to stay there for a while, doesn't seem like they always do though. I don't think you can change difficulties easily, maybe save game editing but I dunno. You can use this instead if you want:

As long as u dont leave the planet , it stays for quite a long time. Maybe even if u do leave .
