can you eat/use things directly out of inventory?

I was hungry. I wanted to eat some food. Is the only way to do this to equip it, select the item slot, and then click to use the item? Or is it possible to eat it directly out of inventory somehow?

Yes. Open inventory, click item, drag it outside the inventory box, and click anywhere. Works for building and everything.
