Dash Tech Quest
Okay... I HATE dash tech. I NEVER use it after I've unlocked it.

It has never, ever worked reliably for me.

And yet now, I find I have to run an obstacle course which seems to be a prereq for getting the techs I actually like and use?

Not really happy with that, I find the interface far too clunky to be able to do the twitchier parts of the game, like those jumping puzzles in the challenge zones. Those are just certain death for me.

I prefer to think my way through the game, not twich my way through it. Please bear that in mind when you're building in (what appear to be) unskipable quests.

Edit (July 2019): For those coming to this via Google, years later, I have a quick solution for the problem that I (and others had), sadly this does not involve a way to actually do the quest correctly, but it does get you past this particular quest, should you reach the the point of giving up on it.

Solution, type:
/admin /warp nowhere=2585.820

In the options menu, it should be possible to map multiple keys to one action. Try remapping S (as you won't need to crouch during the test - you can put it back to normal after) to 'move right', so you have both the S and D keys to make your character go right. Then you just press one key right after the other to dash. That should make it easier to do the double-tap, because the timing can be a little finicky.

Hm... that's a possibility, I'll give that a try if/when I make a new character.

Hey Nakos, I'm not sure this'll work, but if you send me your save I'll try and complete the quest for you and send it back. I could do the other two obstacle courses too.

I have managed to get past the quest with both of my current characters. Also, I'm on a Mac, so my save files probably wouldn't be compatable.

Thank you though, I appreciate the offer.

After trying for so long that I was super frustrated and actually getting worse at my attempts because my hand was getting so tired and sore I gave in and used admin commands to give my character access to purchase the techs. I've played hundreds of hours of Terraria and did not want to be forced to play Starbound without double jump. I was able to get through the dash obstacle course once but couldn't repeat that success on my second character. And I couldn't finish the double jump test even once. I've probably played over 1000 hours of Terraria if you include the mobile version and I know how to use double jump despite Starbound telling me that I have failed at this skill.

I didn't ever want to use admin commands, and dash tech I don't use or care about but I wasn't willing to lose out on the possibility of double jump because I failed some arbitrary test. I've watched Youtube Let's Plays where players got through those tests easily. Made me wonder if my computer is lagging or maybe my wireless keyboard is too slow. Whatever the reason, I don't want to waste anymore time worrying about it. I just want to play the game that I purchased and not be judged for my performance.

We might've met a snag there, yes.

If you don't mind cheating, though, I suggest you look into the whole /admin business Promise mentioned for any new characters you need to get past this quest. Apparently just entering the mode will allow you to hand in quests without actually completing them. Haven't tested it because I know once I learn how to use that stuff I'll be tempted to do so again, and then the game'll become boring.

Hope you enjoy the rest of the game!

Simply type /admin in the chat box while in single player to enter admin mode.
I'm not sure if you can submit quests without completing them but I know for the dash quest you can just walk through the cryo beams while in admin mode.
Just type /admin again to turn it off.

If all you need is to skip is a cyro or two, get a weapon with blink on it. Like on the final cyro room skip the first, dash the second, skip the third.

I don't know if you noticed in the Workshop for Starbound or not yet but there is a mod that uses different keybindings for dash in addition to the default running simultaneously. It may or may not help you in your situation but I thought I'd bring it to your attention since you're having trouble.
It is infuriating that I can't progress any further because of something as stupid and simple as an obstacle course. I really would like like play this game, but this is seemingly the end of the line for me on this particular game.

I loved this game when I played it back in beta. I was really looking forward to the full release.

I give up.

I don;t know what the devs are thinking... seems like they put the hardest things first. While I was OK with the tutorial, I know quite a few people who are similarly unable to complete the test.

Of the first 4 bosses -- the first one, (Dreadwing) was definitely the hardest. Of the obstacle course, the hardest test is first.

Why make it a test? Why not just a playground that allows you to use the skill if you want, but not be so strict when it comes to pass/fail?

I got an anti-ghosting keyboard primarily because I was having so much difficulty playing Starbound in EA (I couldn't double jump effectively). But buying new hardware shouldn't be a requirement for a game of this type...

Dreadwing is a sidequest boss, he is intentionally difficult, and he's not the first boss.

You know, why even bother with all this acqusition of equipment and just give everything to everyone for free? Yes, it's a sandbox game, but an exploration platform one at that, so things may take a bit of trialing to get or to complete.

He was one of the only two on my list in the beginning of the game... making him one of the first bosses.

My point is, the difficulty curve is BACKWARD... instead of things getting progressively more difficult, they start off hard, and then get easier.

No one is asking for items for free, where are you even getting that?

Chucklefish did an amazing job at the tech quests, even the Dash.
It is extremely easy and I'm struggling to even believe that there's a lot of people who can't pass it, wtf?????

It's literally open door, double tap
I thought the problem might have just been my keyboard. I don't have a nice one, its just a standard model you can buy at any store. So I tried using my Steam Controller and its no better at all. I am still stuck exactly where I have been for days. I just want to move past this stupid obstacle course that is preventing me from playing the rest of an otherwise really fun game.

The first little bit with the sliding doors is fine. Its just the right level of challene. Its when I get to the ice beam things were it becomes impossible. Why does it need to be so precise there is no margin for error? It is WAY harder than it ever needs to be. I don't even care about the dash, I just want to be able to use techs. Why is this overly difficult obstacle course preventing me from progessing though even the earlist points of this game?

Maybe you can have someone you trust that plays the game use TeamViewer or something to do the quest for you or something.

That is a good idea! I hadn't thought of something like that!

I'm wondering if at least for some people, the thing that's making these harder than they should be is performance issues with the game (we all know it's not as well optimized as it should be yet), which would lead to input latency on some setups. Not enough for normal inputs, but just enough to make double inputs unreliably frustrating.

I know that doesn't help matters and isn't a solution, but I think it might be a possible cause.

And yeah, I hate that double-tap input scheme as well, wish there was a seperate keybind available so you could just hit that once. Might be able to make an AutoHotkey script for that, though you probably would have to do two binds (one for each direction).
