As far as I can tell (at this point) things I need are locked behind this quest which I find frustrating, unfun, excruciating, etc.
I'm not seeing that as good game design here.
The appeal of Starbound for me is exploration and building. Not the twitch parts.
Do I get an option to go back and slap the Doctor in the face and tell him where he can stick his stupid obstacle course? Do I get an option to obtain the various kinds of tech through other means?
It doesn't seem like I do at this point.
Ahh... I'm afraid I don't agree with your assessment.
Everyone is different. It's certainly nice that the quest is "not too difficult" for you, but I think our experieces are going to diverge sharply.
One finger on the E key and one finger on the D key... That was the only way I could dash with any semblance of speed.
Although I don't think it's mandatory or hindering in any way. All it does imho is give you a useless dash tech that you'll never use again. Plus you can still use the tech station without doing the mission (I'm pretty sure at least) so, I'd just ignore it if it's too hard or you can't be bothered.
What's hard about the dash one? Just hug the door and flip the switch on the last part. I literally walked through that last section and didn't even dash.
Nice for you that you're young and have good reflexes and undamaged nerves.
Maybe best not to assume that everyone has the same gifts, hmm?
Cheat.
I don't know why its so bad now, it used to be just fine and never had an issue. Now the controls are kinda unresponsive and laggy.
During the conversation they ran though the multiple ways to get crews and ship upgrades, because they didn't want players 'to feel forced to quest, or build a base'
So what are the alternate paths for tech skills?
Also, the challenge missions are just not fun in general. Theres no risk in performing them, and so far I've seen no real puzzle element to their design. Depending on your platforming skills you'll either be a little annoyed the game is wasting your time, or really annoyed because you can't complete it. You aren't coming out of those missions thinking 'wow that was great, I'm so glad I spent time on that'
