Does rain make water in larger holes, instead of small areas?

Depending on the weather currently active, water can come from rain in any type of hole (On the surface background blocks are required, otherwise the water will drain out).

To facilitate a source of easy to get fish I usually build a big moat right alongstside my base with platforms so I can cross it....with enough rain the moat eventually fills up with water (or you can collect it from an ocean planet) and given enough time (provided the hole is big enough) fish will start to swim in it... :)

Gotta love the evolution of fish in this game.
