Is nexus relevant?
i use nexus for fallout/skryim, but the starbound mods on there are all from like 2014 and dont work. is there anywhere to get ship mods? like the cool ones on nexus, except they work? the workshop doesnt really have any except the firefly ship, but that ones pretty small. if you have a cool ship mod that works and have a location thats pretty easy to use comment a link! thanks

2 good places to get mods. Workshop. (Yeah sorry if this is not what you look for) but also playstarbound website. I think you need to sub to it to download anything but it's worth it.

It's just that updates broke a lot of nexus mods and nobody has bothered use it for a while.
In terms of design I feel it's better than the Chucklefish site, and you can download raw files without an account. I'm surprised it isn't used more.

I can only name one mod that is even compatible with 1.0 that is from nexus... I believe it is a race mod; however the author does offer on the main site as well using alternate download. Which is nice for me... I don't know too many off that site that are up to date, just the one.

Unfortunately I don't quite remember quite the name of the race... Very bad with names... ><

One thing to note is not to boot up from steam... You will have to boot up the game directly from teh EXE file. One could make a shortcut for the file on desktop in order to quickly do so. i have done that for the times i don't want to use steam.

And yes it goes into the mod folder.

Running through steam only uses workshop items if you have downloaded once from workshop.

Playing directly from the exe file will use the mod folder, since obviously doing it that way does not register that it is going through steam, since you aren't.

that is the way to go about playing each. It is one or the other, but not both workshop and mod folder. Hope that clarifies it a bit.

Yeah that is why I have only chosen to use on site mods. Easier to handle, drag n drop which ones to take out and the like.

there are a few on steam workshop that are not on site, as well one that I know of that is just not yet been updated. Pixel goods store. Shame on that, but it is the case unfortunately...

in the main directory there are a few directories labeled with OS system divided into 32 bit and 64 bit.

When you browse local files. I am assuming windows... there is a win32 & win64 directory. Mostly likely though I would think most are on a 64-bit system so using the win64 directory and should be in there.
