Steam Deck Compatibility
Has anyone tried to play Starbound on a Steam Deck yet, if so, how's the experience?

The game's just too optimized for M&KB due in large part to mouse aiming. Even the touchpad isn't enough to make the game feel right.

I honestly suck at coming up with full control schemes for Steam Deck, so I can't hel with that sadly. I do know that the community ones I tried all felt off and too difficult to use in combat situations. Hopefully someone more clever than me thinks up a way to make the controls feel right on Deck.

Not to mention the game relies HEAVILY on CPU and only uses 2 cores. The Steam deck is highly designed around multi threading... which this game doesn't do AT ALL. So it needs "high horsepower" cores... The Steam Deck uses a highly optimized, mid speed multi core processor. But not the fastest cores... cause that would overhead and shut down such a small mobile device. Sadly the way the game was written (with no GPU usage, and pure CPU usage, thus needing very high performance cores... which it only uses TWO of in the first place) it's really not designed for anything other than a very high power desktop.

Which is a shame, cause it would be awesome as a portable game. But it was programmed by sub-par coders... and it's code is spaghetti code Lua, instead of very optimized C++. That's not to mention what Star-X said about the control scheme. It just doesn't work for a controller, which anything mobile would certainly use. Sadly, you'll probably be using a desktop for the game (unless it's a REALLY high end tricked out high performance single core performance laptop... which almost certainly would have to have a dual battery setup to give any endurance)

Thank you for your reply, marked this as the answer for now.

Spaghetti Lua code :lunar2019crylaughingpig: That hurts. Thank you for your reply, this makes sense.

I know Terraria is compatible with a controller with the 2nd stick acting like a mouse (limiting the mouse controls to just a small circle around the character)

Isnt there an option within the game or a mid that does this?

(I havent played the game but was going to mess around with it on the deck)
But hearing how aiming is crucial kinda puts me off trying

It's not just aiming, it's also heavily mouse-dependant for inventory management and building bases etc.
I’ve played almost 1000 hours.
80% on steam deck.
Open starbound a fork of the game runs flawlessly on steam deck with only hiccups at around the 900th mod.
The control mapping takes getting used to but the touchpad works great as a mouse and if you don’t mind using the virtual keyboard occasionally (character creation) you’ll have a blast.

Did you do your mapping via the fork options or via SteamDeck control profiles?
