edit: sorry if i was rude, i was just pissed at the cancellation of the update. I still stand by my idea that the devs are still trying to give new content but can't do as much as before because they lost their passion.
Secondly, i believe that the bounty hunter update wouldve been extremely fun, but for some rediculous reasons the devs said "oh nah, this update isnt fun enough we can do better". They showed off enough for people to know it was gonna be awesome, but rather than releasing it after some polishing they decide to trash it for now to focus on the Xbox One release. Because yknow, people on Xbox One are totally gonna buy a million copies of this game.
Console won't have mods, so whats the point? If you can't mod starbound, you're not gonna get a whole lot of gameplay out of it. Especially with the vanilla intro missions. With mods you can not only fix a whole lot of issues, but you can add hundreds of hours of gameplay. I have over 800 hours in Starbound at this current moment. Why? Mods. If I played without mods? I'd have about 20 hours tops.
In short, the devs have no idea what they're doing. If they really dont want the bounty hunter update out, then they should focus on polishing the game itself. Starting off with fixing the awful first mission where you have to get a bunch of those stupid core crystal things. They should do what frackin universe did and make players run through a dungeon to get those core crystals, not either dig to the earths core or explore some boring mine looking for scraps.
its a great game but it needs more content. looks like that probably won't happen

I cannot say, in the slightest, that this surprises me. What will surprise me is if we actually see another update. My money is on "After XB1, it's done."
It's literally just randomly generated missions, most of the work would be in writing the dialogue, they already have a mission system that RNG's missions, they'd just be condensing it down into a single board instead of the NPCs that wander around the towns.
I don't really see any problem to integrate it more into the game, when it comes to lore at least.
The bounties could be advertised out as a plan from another surviving part of the Terrene Protectorate, which is more concerned about reestablishing the organisation, and - instead of focusing on the Occasus and Ruin like Esther does - focuses on securing and protecting the daily lives on the planets.
That was one core competencies of the organisation, even one reason why it was founded in the first place. And we are supposed to believe, they don't know how to integrate it?
If anything, this theme for an update fits the game much better - so much better - than the mechs and random space anomalies, ancient vaults and weapon upgrades, terraforming and elemental attributes, or made up collections, which give the player nothing except something to,well, collect.
But it is as it is...the positive side is, for a very long time most mods will be save to use. No update ahead, which makes them incompatible overnight.
