The only thing they have in common is the graphics and the fact that they use blocks
Sorry. It's just that they are both different games, be it gameplay, progression, well everything. If you want a comparison with Terraria... Starbound is very very open and require you to sort of create your own stories while Terraria gives you objectives in the way of bosses, biomes etc
In Starbond, you can speedrun "tiers", not do the (lack of) story etc. I usually quote someone coming sometime on the game's discussions who really described the game shortly and perfectly, "Starbound is a blank canvas"
it is like Terraria, but with less RPG elements and progression, but with more explorations and sandbox
Starbound is for those people who don't like fighting monsters, bosses, craft equipment, check your stats, trying various building and farming the same enemies over and over to get Rod of Discord - but for those who want to explore planets and biomes, craft blocks, build houses and cities, create their colonies, do various misc quests, create their own adventure. it is a vast game, not like Terraria that has start and finish with linear progression
if you played Terraria and ever wondered, "damn I wish I could have just build the huge city and inhabit it with NPCs - instead of fighting those Blood Moon a--holes, who don't let me to build even a simple house in peace!", then Starbound is might be for you
but if you played Terraria because you like crafting your own swords and armors, then unleash a horde of projectiles and summons on bosses - and you wish more action (that's why you checked Calamity mod), then Starbound is might be not for you
SB has a slower & clunkier but more detailed movement system while Terraria has a fast & simplistic movement system.
SB primarily focuses on exploration while Terraria primarily focuses on combat.
Terraria has a semi-linear progression system while SB is a sandbox with a linear story.
Terraria is well optimized while SB has a hard time running on a nasa computer from time to time.
