Lost items in lava
I took a couple of years off from playing. Today I lost all my items in the lava at the center of a planet. Previously when this happened I could get them back by building a tunnel and extracting the lava until I was at the bottom of the planet. It seems like that is no longer possible, as all my items are simply gone from the bottom, they are not there? This is frustrating, why would they change this? I even went into admin mode and still could not find them! Anyone else have this happen?

Items can't be retrieved from core lava, it's gone forever. Items that touch the bottom row of blocks on a planet get deleted.

I feel so sorry for you...

Lol, not a big deal, lost a few diamonds, food and 80+ bandages. I just seem to remember getting that stuff back before, but maybe that was a lava planet. I for sure lost my items once in a lava ocean, and spent quite some time creating a tunnel to the bottom, and got my items back, and I thought I had done the same near a core.

Just spawn it again if you're so unhappy

You shouldn't have to cheat to make the game more enjoyable. It's ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ lol. There needs to be some way to retrieve important items, maybe even at a price.

You're almost a year late to this conversation. If you're looking for a place to vent your frustration, I suggest starting a new discussion.

I know this is an old topic bump, but this ♥♥♥♥ just happened to me after I jumped over a ledge, the game happened to have that annoying little lag spike, missed the double jump, happened to fall right through a giant chasm, right into the lava lake. I am absolutely fuming at this point

I mean, this isn't a starbound exclusive problem. How many times have we burned to death in minecraft, losing precious gears and resources? or any open world that has dropable inventory for that matter?

The sole advice I can give, is don't die next time.

For me, the annoying part is that damn little lagspike that the devs don't seem to want to fix that killed me ultimately

I feel you, and it's not likely to be fixed any day. At some point you get use to it

Yeah, the lag spike thing that I think you are talking about is when falling long distances, at some point the game switches backgrounds, to the underground one, and for some reason that causes a lag. Also there is a 'block limit', that drives me nuts, I have an elevator thingy on a rail, that goes to the floor of an ocean planet from the surface, and the elevator never will come when called if far away because of the block limit. So sometimes I wing it and just jump down the shaft, get the lag thing though. One thing I have learned since is to always put a water pool, about 10-15 deep at the bottom of these shafts or pits I leave, then you just hit the water. :) I even have a shaft all the way to the core on a planet, put some stone and a pool of water, and jummmmmpppp.....

If only there was no auto-save immediately after dying, it could be used to retrieve things, but instead the only option is to make a manual copy of the character files.

For me it wasn't some tunnel or shaft I made, instead I was simply exploring and thinking it goes further down.

Just to be bamboozled as the scenery changed and by the lack of background tiles to put a foothold and get out of the lava for good, repeatedly being dipped like a nacho-chip in hot sauce until dying and leaving all my juicy life and the loot and gear I've accumulated during its short-lived time.

If I could've I would've made a landing spot with water, but since there is no mini-map this is almost a guaranteed lesson everybody will encounter who doesn't create stairs to slowly descend and instead jumps down with intent to double-jump against the fall damage.

TL;DR

Sorry for necroventing but it seemed alright considering this is a never-ending issue only enhanced by how the auto-saves function ruins the playthrough; instead of alleviating the issue through auto-saving.

Fracking mod pack has a block that keeps off screen areas loaded (mostly lol) so you can use a big rail track
Sadly the base game is abandonware and there are only a few modders to take on the bugs left behind...that mod pack also contains a single use escape item that you can research and craft before jumping in a death pit to teleport away from the death pit haha
As for "lag" use the source port...openstarbound...the vanilla game dumps all its calculations on a single cpu thread, this cripples performance on any system and that just how it is. The source port splits some of this workload so you should get vastly better performance.

That's an option, although it -will- lag when overused and I have no idea if you will need to reactivate them after restarting the game. I suggest just using teleporters to get around, they are easy enough to get with FU. Or flags, you can craft one in [C] menu and it will work as teleporter on surface layer.
