You're almost a year late to this conversation. If you're looking for a place to vent your frustration, I suggest starting a new discussion.
The sole advice I can give, is don't die next time.
For me, the annoying part is that damn little lagspike that the devs don't seem to want to fix that killed me ultimately
I feel you, and it's not likely to be fixed any day. At some point you get use to it
For me it wasn't some tunnel or shaft I made, instead I was simply exploring and thinking it goes further down.
Just to be bamboozled as the scenery changed and by the lack of background tiles to put a foothold and get out of the lava for good, repeatedly being dipped like a nacho-chip in hot sauce until dying and leaving all my juicy life and the loot and gear I've accumulated during its short-lived time.
If I could've I would've made a landing spot with water, but since there is no mini-map this is almost a guaranteed lesson everybody will encounter who doesn't create stairs to slowly descend and instead jumps down with intent to double-jump against the fall damage.
TL;DR
Sorry for necroventing but it seemed alright considering this is a never-ending issue only enhanced by how the auto-saves function ruins the playthrough; instead of alleviating the issue through auto-saving.
Fracking mod pack has a block that keeps off screen areas loaded (mostly lol) so you can use a big rail track
Sadly the base game is abandonware and there are only a few modders to take on the bugs left behind...that mod pack also contains a single use escape item that you can research and craft before jumping in a death pit to teleport away from the death pit haha
As for "lag" use the source port...openstarbound...the vanilla game dumps all its calculations on a single cpu thread, this cripples performance on any system and that just how it is. The source port splits some of this workload so you should get vastly better performance.
