Space Station or Planet side Colony
Finally decided to try to build a massive colony with every tenent type and was wondering which would be best, in terms of buildability and rewards. Also what tier is a space station classed as?

I'm pretty sure that ships and space staions count as tier 1. (In the changelog it specifically said that it made ships default to tier 1, and I'm guessing space stations too.) For deciding on which tier you want, there are several things you should consider:
  • If there are any specific crop seeds you need, and can't find find them any other way, then you could put a colony on a planet with a tier that gives you those seeds. To know specifically what seeds are given for which tier, you can look on the wiki at starbounder.org. (If you go to the "Tenants" page[starbounder.org] and scroll down to where it shows the percent chances of getting pixels, seeds, weapons etc., if you click on the word "SEEDS" on the chart it should take you to the list of which seeds drop for which tiers[starbounder.org].)
  • As one could guess, tenants give more pixels on higher tier planets, so if you want the most money, extremely hot planets would be the way to go.
  • Similar to the previous tip, if the colony is tier 4 or above, than tenants will give you better healing items. (Medical Kits and Nanowrap Bandages instead of Salves and Bandages.)
  • Also, this doesn't have to do with location but rather tenant types: Merchant tenants (ones that sell stuff) have different gift chances than villagers (ones that don't sell anything). Villagers have 40% for pixels, 20% for healing items, and 15% for seeds, while merchants have 55% for pixels, 10% for healilng items, and 10% for seeds. (All other types of gifts are the same for both of them.)
  • While I'm nearly certain that tenants are immune to radiation/extreme cold/extreme heat, there are some weather events that can be dangerous to tenants: On toxic planets (radioactive with a poison ocean) there can be acid rain, which hurts anybody not under cover. Also on tier 6 planets (may or may not include decayed aka scorched planets, because the wiki has conflicting info) there can be meteor showers, which can kill tenants and players, and also destroy blocks. (EDIT: I checked in-game, and it showed meteor shower weather only on decayed aka scorched planets.) Also, on volcanic planets, there are cinder showers, where flames fall from the sky. They don't hurt anybody, but they will slowly destroy the blocks they land on.

I'm too considering starting a colony, and I guess I'll desert my space station. Maybe make it look run down and raided, and leave it floating in space...
Above was off track, but what tier 6 planet would be the best fit for terraforming? Magma, Volcano, or Sorched? I'm willing to pay the price (Not looking for a recomendation on if it's worth it, I want a dangerous lush land no matter how expensive! The wild garden full of.. flowers... Yeah, flowers! Dangerous flowers!), as I've read on the wiki that terraforming keeps the difficulty tier, but changes the weather. Right now, I'm thinking that scorched is the way to go, I just want to see if someone agrees, as it looks the most promising.

Well, if you're sure that it changes the weather then I guess either Volcanic or Scorched would be fine, but not Magma unless you want a lava ocean around you, because I'm pretty sure that would stay.

Thanks bubbagamer for the advice, I guess I'll be building on a hot planet. Also what Charcocoa mentioned was interesting, I never thought of terraforming before. That rises some interesting combinations, e.g. a Geode/Hive minibiome might beinteresting to build my colony in. Unless I have to use a big terraformer then I'm going snowy.

I terraformed a scorched planet. It was a huge pain in the butt, like 10 vaults worth of essence. I've been getting tons of neonmelon and avamango seeds as well as a huge town full of guys that give me pixels plenty. Plus merchants galore of every type so I can buy tons of items to fill out my scanning catalog. It's pretty awesome. I imagine it would be even better with other real people! It does change the weather, no meteor showers or fire storms anymore.

I did have to clean up a lot of the lava which I did by going to an ocean world and then dumping water all over the place.

A big terraformer is what you need to change the climate and weather of a planet, just so you know!
However after you're done with the big terraformer, you can use a Geode/Hive Microformer to make that mini biome!

Just so you know, you can get them from the vaults after you beat the main quest. However, that's not to say you can't start building now! Make a bunker colony if you haven't completed the main quest!

By bunker do you mean underground?

Yes, meteor showers and cinder showers should be blocked when you're underground.
