Midnight planets: What the heck is going on here?

So, just imagine flying around looking for these dang dirty apex clues (at this point I'm better off contracting some sort of space std at some hyotl brothel), within the same sol you find some planet thats all emo/edgy looking and decide "let's see if they're here by some random chance?". Fly down in your mech and start going around and what nots, taking in the scenery that looks as if edgar alen poe would write about. Eventually you come across some knife armed xeno that charges right at you like a loony on crack. Later you find some showy people that don't even attack you and start to feel wrong about killing them...


What the hell is going on in this nightmarish hell hole, any actual lore reasons behind whats going on here?

"Knife armed xeno" You say? Flippin' Orbides, always freak me out if they come up from behind me. Their description is very true-to-life, I'm disturbed as to why the heck are they limping but more than that I'd rather stuff their glowy head with my aegisalt energy arrow than asking them what they are.

I have no idea how the shadow people came to be either, they're just chillin' and will even talk to you (not really, they only say three dots and an exclaimation mark)
