Is Starbound dead?
..like in terms of development? I've not seen a patch for years now.

So from a development standpoint, yes. The game is "dead", insofar as any other release is.

It's certainly not dead. New mods appear on the workshop daily still. And people are still playing it. Games are only dead when there is no way to play them. Development has certainly slowed. As they are no longer gaining much revenue from it, they've moved their resources to other revenue streams. That's just business. They have bills and such too, you know. And without DLC or microtransactions to ensure a revenue from this game, they've moved their attention elsewhere. As I say, they have a right to. They ARE hiring for the Starbound team. Stipulations are to live in their London area, and other such. Those job offerings are still out there, but have not yet been taken. They have plans, but their attention is where their money is coming in, as again, I say it should be. Business is business.

But rumors of Starbound's death are quite premature. In the words of Monty Python. "I'm not dead yet!".

if people are still bothering to ask if a game is dead its probably not.

And if people read what I wrote they'd not assume that I meant that there's no one playing anymore.

It's not dead, we are getting the Bounty Hunting Update... eventually.

The game will still be getting updates. If you follow chucklefish on their discord theres a pinned message from a few weeks ago stating that they're hiring new people so that they can continue working on the game.
So no, it's not dead.

Bounty Hunting is on indefinate hiatus. What they were doing wasn't up to their idea of fun. It's on hold... for an indefinate period of time.

I didn't mean to criticize. But English is rather... precise with it's tenses and what they mean. Which is understandable having descended from Old Germanic. All Germanic languages tend to be very specific. English more so than modern day German in many ways. The past tense (recruited) implies that the hiring process is complete. While the present tense (recruiting) means it's still in the process of being done.

Forgive me if I get a bit verbose. I'm an amateur etymologist, particularly of the English language (a language that has had a very unique evolution unlike any other European language... befitting an island nation, I suppose).

Doubt we'll see any major updates going forward. It is content complete as it is.

I would certainly like to see some new stuff. An in game server browser would be great for multiplayer for folks like me who have no one to coop with but I'd be happy with more quests to do and more post story content.

I would pay money for a good DLC or Starbound 2.

Hell, I would even buy a few copies for my friends if they developed a patch with a nice amount of content.

Thankfully, modders are keeping this game alive.

The game is "stable and complete" are you kidding ? The new starbound is really disapointing, the game became so much linear compared to before :

Now when you start a new game, you spawn on the same starter planet with the same biome, find a portal to teleport to the same headquarter proposing the same quests wth the same npcs, have to do the same story-quest in the same non-procedural dungeon to let you explore the "procedural universe" with again the same few planets types and almost everytime the same biomes on each...

Take temperate ocean planets for exemple, THEY ARE ALL THE SAME IN THE ENTIRE UNIVERSE ! each time it's litteraly the same biome : (
