Starbound or Terraria?
I'm planning to buy one of the two games to play with my girlfriend.
We like building, having pets, surviving, good character creation, etc.

Which one do you recommend for us?

Thanks.

Get Terraria instead, its more exciting, less grindy, and pretty much not abandoned by the devs. Plus it runs alot smoother than starbound in terms of performance.

+1 for everything but the abandoned part. It is either getting a total overhaul, or is just a hobby at this point, but development is still ongoing.

Terraria is more coherent and a better design, even if it has less to do, and gets very grindy towards the end. Starbound starts out grindy and stays there, though it is less than what Terraria eventually hits. I would check back after 1.4 is released as Starbound could make a comeback, but at this point the devs are in their cave hammering away at something.

Both are good in their own ways. I haven't actually played Terraria in a while (the DS version spoiled me) on my computer. I do not know how much the base game has changed in terms of in-game documentations (when I started, a lot of crafting/help type info required alt-tabbing and web browsing).

I would praise either one as good choices. Your best bet is to try both for about 15 minutes apiece and decide before the refund timer expires.

Starbound has ships and multiple planets.
Terraria has zombie invasions and grappling hooks.
Starbound has a semi story line you can follow.
Terraria has epic boss fights to tackle.
Starbound has a varity of races to choose from.
Terraria has a lot of hair and color options.

Both have a wiring system. Both have some form of pet system. Both are very fun.

Get Starbound! Terraria is literally Minecraft in 2D.

terraria... Have more content, consistency and to this day devs keep putting more and more things to spicy up the game... Meanwhile you have starbound a bunch of system put together that not always works well together.

Definitely Terraria.

Terraria, it has more content, better performance, all the items are more memorable

Starbounds basegame is ok but lacks replayability imo, it really relys on mods to make it amazing (skyrim does the same thing).

Thank you guys! We haven't decided yet but you gave us an idea of what the games are about :]

Terraria hands down. It has much more charm than Starbound and feels more fluid in gameplay. Also as I experienced it, I think Terraria is more thought-through and better designed and I had a blast playing it solo or with my friends.

Imo Starbound is just not as memorable when you think back and compare them even though it's an ok game.

Depends on your niche. What people are forgetting to mention is that Terraria is an end-game grinder geared more towards combat. Can you build? Yes. Can you craft? Yes. Can you allow tenants to move in once you accomplish certain milestones? Yes. However, you're stuck on a singular map. You can make another map and transfer stuff to your old one, sure, but that breaks immersion. For games like this, Terraria lacks that one thing that's an absolute requirement: exploration. Technically it's there but it's lackluster, uninspiring, and more of a copy/paste than Starbound and is extremely linear. Also, the mods are absolutely pitiable. And yes, it runs far better than Starbound.

Starbound, however, has all of that except for solid performance, crap mods, and being stuck on a single map. The optimization is subpar, the mods are astounding, and you have a plethora of planets to visit even if some are copy/paste of one another (that said, still far more variety than Terraria offers). Chucklefish cannot, however, be relied on to deliver a good promise. There is a story but it's too generic to totally care about and you can ignore if if you wish to.

Personally, I've played the two to death and I'd have to say Starbound. It is leaps and bound ahead of Terraria in a technical/content standpoint and has that much more replayability.
