Is there any way to restore a deleted save file?
My little ♥♥♥♥ of a sister decided that the best christmas present to give me would be to delete my main Starbound save. Is there any way to get it back?

I have tested and confirmed that the in-game deletion method wipes out the .player file, their corresponding .shipworld file, and their .bak files. Those are all pretty much gone.

Fortunately, all the planets and star systems remain intact. If you had stored any of your items on a planet or space station, then you could recover those by navigating to /Starbound/storage/universe and finding the coordinates of said planets and stations based on the date you last remember visiting them. When you fix your ship as a new character, you can head to those coordinates and get some of your stuff back.

I strongly advise periodically backing up your game's "storage" folder to a safe location going forward.

Not to my knowledge

But be prepared and back the file up if it happens again

No, she used the in-game deletion method. Didn't go to the recycle bin, I checked, didn't pass go, didn't collect $200.

I'm marking this as the topic answer until I get a more definitive yes or no.

Thank you, friend, for the confirmation at least. I hope you have happy holidays.

You could attempt to use file recovery software like Recuva to get back the deleted files, though no guarantees that it'll work. The longer it has been since you deleted the files, the less likely it'll work.

If you partition your PC regularly as you should, you should be able to reset your PC [back] to a previous time when the save was located on the PC, regardless of in-game wiping.
