Mech combat is horrible
First off, contact damage. Everything just swarms you and does contact damage while you're in the middle of a bullet hell and you can just watch your drill arm go right through enemies while they continue doing contact damage. Trying to pick your fights barely works because enemies can see you miles before you can see them.

Second, what genius decided that the energy for your weapons AND movement AND utilities should ALSO be your life bar? Because that is mind blowingly stupid.

Third, whoever designed this aiming system should win an award for how dumb this is, because shots almost never go to where your reticle was when you pulled the trigger. You start the player off with a single-shot weapon (that you named a flak cannon. I'm not sure you understand what flak is.) that absolutely does not go to where you were aiming when you fired if you're moving at all, then you give all the enemies twice the speed of the player so that running is not a choice and leading a target while being swarmed is impossible.

This is by far the most tedious part of the entire game.

On the flip side, mech mining is vastly superior to being stuck with the matter manipulator, so, there's that...

You can see ennemies before they target you with the red arrows and the moving camera.
You would have liked an energy bar and a life bar? Why not, let's make a health bar that can't be replenished! Great idea!
The aiming system is good. The weapons are not on the center of the mech, but the reticle is based on the player. Both arms can't aim at exactly the same target
And leading with the flak cannon is quite easy on early encounters. You just need training.

Contact damage kind of applies to all combat.
yeh its kind of bad to start out, it get managable later but only through a lot of grinding... however; few points:

hold ctrl and move the mouse to view enemies before they view you (also make sure to change the default zoom level in options)

most weapons inherit your movement to a degree, so if you're moving left and shooting something above you then youll have to aim a bit to the right to correct the drift... though theres some weapons where this isnt the case (notably the energy sword and beam rifle)

once you get upgraded boosts avoiding contact damage is easy; until then id advise you always have your drill charged so you can deflect them

mechs are such an ignorable unfinished broken and pointless feature, I just ignore them. The onyl reaosn to ahve them is to farm higher mech parst and then never use them because mechs have no purpose int he remaining parts of the game.

Mods give mech combat so much needed love, especially FU which gives easily craftable beginner weapons worth a damn.

I know I know, not everyone likes mods. But you do see a lot of people complaining about vanilla gameplay....so.....

just use a rocket spear and by-pass space combat by propelling yourself backwards though space.
doesn't strike me as very enertaining or tense.
just more touch based damage.
