Would a dedicated server help at all with lag?
Or connect via IP? I've been trying to help get my friend get a stable, or at least mostly stable game running when playing with me. He runs an i5 6600k, and one of the higher tier 9 series Geforce cards, while as I'm running an i7 3930k and a 1070GTX. What I can't understand is another friend who rarely plays has an i3 something....yet is getting better performance than him.

We do have a lot of mods, but really it has only cropped up with this god awful 1.3 patch CF has left us dead in the water with.

Having said that, I have read that running a dedicated server actually helps with lag, but the only thing is it would be running off my own computer anyway, so I'm not sure if that is going to make a differnce or not. Buying a hosting service (which I've done in the past for other games, including Starbound) would be a little pointless in this case since it would just be me and him playing.

I used to run Steamworks games in the past, (before the hosting service) but that was hosting for mulitple people at once, and this was before 1.3. I don't think the lag was nearly as bad then.

I would be following this guide, but the most ardruious task would be adding the mods from the workshop, as I have about 250 of them. So I wanted to ask if this would be helping at all before I start. (Again, this would be off my own computer, not a seperate box, and only running when he's on to play. Unless the difference is that much that I would use it when playing alone too.)

For reference, the peformance I'm getting is similar based on this video I recorded, only for my friend this seems to happen a lot more often and seemingly longer. (Like, 4-5 second pauses.) Notice the pauses when picking up items. I've seen other videos of other players and players describing the same thing in forums, so I know I'm not the only one.

(No, my hardware is not that bad. I'm actually running at 1080p at 60 FPS. Quality is downgraded for file size reasons. Admin was on for testing purposes in singleplayer, which is still techincally a server.)

The mods we use. (Mods not listed here only add music.) The above video is with these mods loaded, and I generally have never experienced a conflict except a minor one which only happens at random. (No idea what would be causing it either.)

what i found out after playing with my friends on starbound if i joined them via steam it got rid of the 4 5 second pauses for me but my friend who was hosting still got them

Steam is always how we've been playing though recently. I'm not expecting a 100% flawless experience but at least to lessen the lag to at least what I experience in the video I posted.

The delay is absolutely horrible. During rain, in a lightning lab, my FPS was shot down to like 12 FPS. Though not sure if relevant. Multiplayer itself has lot of weird lag and delays as well. Sigh.

Delay in what? My video? Worse than my video? Or is this your experience? We usually don't get framerate problems and it's rare, (when we do I know what mods are causing it but one authos can't and the other author won't do anything about it) we just get the stutters you see in the video and lag. Only somehow for my friend it's a lot worse, even if he plays by himself.

(Also I redid my OP to explain the hardware we were running.)

I meant that the game loves doing this delay thing you saw. I usually don't lag but then we have these random hiccup for not sure what reason. People said that this game is unoptimized... =/

Well, the question still stands for anyone who knows, would a dedicated server or connect via IP work any better?

Isn't connect via IP the same? Since it's technically P2P connection. A dedicated server, aka a server that functions ALL the time probably wouldn't do much difference. The way I see it, it's all about "clients connecting to a server or host". This game's optimization isn't quite that great...

Yeah, I figured it was the same as a dedicated. But I see the option to enable it or disable it while playing singleplayer/P2P, so I thought it was strange.

Um, no. I never said that. I merely gave the hardware we were running if the question of what it was ever arose. It was a formality. Some might of thought we were bottlenecking something since the game currently has optimization issues and the server is still running off of my computer. When you list specs in hopes of getting help, you list EVERYTHING that is likely in use at anytime, you don't half ass it. (In retrospect, I forgot to mention my RAM, which was 16GB. Dunno everyone else's.) It doesn't matter if every piece of hardware comes into question or not.

Is that how you troubleshoot? You hide all information until you're 100% sure it's relevant?

The game is more CPU heavy than GPU, a fact that everyone knows, hence why I mentioned everyone's CPU FIRST, NOT the grahpics card. It's why I questioned my other's friend's low spec CPU running the game better than my friend's higher one, I NEVER questioned the GPUs. For all we know CF could of only tested the game on i3's (since it's the recommended CPU on the store) and didn't bother to optimize them on higher ones.

None of us are getting framerate issues, in case you assumed I thought lag=framerate. I questioned why the i3 was running better than the i5. (I don't know the model number of his i3 so I don't know the ghz or threads, that's all he told me. I only gave information I know.)
