Is there any point to building a space station?
Before I sink my time and resources into making one, is there even any point?

What does a space station do that using a custom ship mod doesn't? With the custom ship mod I can still make a huge base/station, AND have it be mobile, beamable to directly from anywhere without having to use another teleporter on the ship, etc. Is there any point to the station?

No. Just something to do if you want to. Having a space station is cool. There's no practical purpose.

You can have a personal mech bay to customize/build mech parts without going to the outpost. Course you can also admin in those items to place on your planet colony too. It's something to do if you fancy it. More options are always better. Not everyone is a stick in the mud (not that I'm saying you are, I have no evidence of that), but some are. It's to ignore if you want to, or pay attention to if you don't.

I dunno, I like the plop and place style of the station, but, it's kinda just, bland, and lacking in features imo.

Its a matter of choise if you want more space to put your things. Yeah, you can buy a base in some random planet, but teleporting to your ship to find important things saves time.

this, people wanted space stations to be free buildabel with oxygen supply and stuff, instead we got some plug and lay modules ... meh.

Well you are comparing it to a mod that was created to solve roughly the same issue. Base game the ship is quite small, you can't do too much with it. The station exists to give you an area just as safe and easy to expand that you can build up to be much larger, but at a cost. That's the only point of it, more space. Using a mod that gives your ship more space and saying the station is pointless is kind of tilted.

If you want to free build a station the game has always had that option. Just go to a planet and fly/climb up into the space layer and build one. There is a distinction between ship/station building and the free building systems because not everyone wants to build something tile by tile all the time. If I just want to throw together some stuff quickly I use the ship or station, if I want to spend hours actually building something unique the universe is my canvas, I can go anywhere I want and start. It's good the game has both options.
My question was solved. The custom race I use is not compatible with the frackin universe BYOS patch even though it says it does, I get the buildable ship but its stuck in infinite warp when you make a character. So, space station with default ship it is! :D

Ship data can get corrupt and leave you with an empty ship. I save my important stuff in my space station and don't put a single thing on my ship.

What makes you think that station data cannot as well be corrupted?

Space stations are a way to live in space and make the game more interesting. We like nice graphics even though there is no practical use for it don't we?
