Can you not place rice or other crops indoors?
So I finally got my bearings, created a new character, went outside and slapped myself around for 40 minutes, and came back and I have all the basic crafting gear on my ship, a simple wooden hovel, and two things of rice that is suppoedly growing only problem is I've been sitting here for 30 minutes and it doesn't seem to have grown past the first growth stage. Can crops not be placed indoors under a opened wooden slot? I use the slot so I can easily open and close the roof to protect against flying monsters.

Did you water them? Outdoor/indoor doesn't matter.

Need to till the ground with a hoe first, plant then water.

I water it every time a growth cycle finishes like the wiki suggests.

Can't do sprinklers now just started.

Yep

it's more than just 2 tiles high. There must be enough empty space above it. I think the minimum tile height for crops is 8 (I usually do 10, as it's an even 5, 2x2 block spacing method that works well for me). That's probably your issue... your room is less than 8 tiles high.
