I don't know how to access multiplayer from within the app of starbound, but by accessing it via Steam I usually have no problem.
Take note that when you are not on your own server (i.e., you are the person who selected "join game"), all your flagged teleport locations will not be present and you will have to save important locations (such as the outpost or the ark) again.
Hope it helps!
1) make sure to port forward
Port:21025
Protocol: TCP
Starbound is one of those games that doesn't multiplayer well without port forwarding. You can continue to use the 3rd party app but it's easier just to forward the port...
2) make sure to configure your options in game for the method your friends will be using to join. There are three check boxes, one for steam play, one for joining via IP, and one to allow mismatched assets.... make sure those options you want to use are checked.
3) follow Licet's instructions.
You probably already figured this out... but starbound is drop in/out multiplayer. Meaning so long as you have the options checked people can join your game. There isn't a separate multiplayer mode per-say. That said, if you have problems with people joining that you don't want joining from your friend's list, go to starbounder, org and look up the instructions for setting up a dedicated server. It's a little obnoxious to start a dedicated server and then join your own game.... but by tweaking the server config files you can limit joining player's ability to mess with things.
