Those tips are general for all of them. Kill everyone, scan everything, loot everything, use notes and CD's. If you need to scan planet for clues, just run around abit, and marker to bad guys will appear.
Here is the solution worked for me I figured out:
1.Locate your universe folder, it should be ../Starbound/storage/universe
2.Find the .world and .system file which has the name of the coordinate of the bounty quest planet, delete them (not sure whether both need to be deleted, I deleted both).
3.Start game, you will find the quest is reset.
PS.I'm not native English speaker so hope my English is not hard to understand. Hope it helps anyway. :)
I attacked the target and he teleported. I checked all the boxes and containers. Turned on the computer and checked that out. Used the scan mode to find the hand print on the mirror. The computer told me what planet he went to, and yet the quest said I still had to search for clues. I spent half an hour searching. I used scan mode on every item I could find. I looked in all the caves in the area and still couldn't find anything.
Conclusion: I ended up abandoning the quest and getting a new one at the Peacekeeper Headquarters or whatever. BUT, I remembered later on that I found a chest before I'd even found the target location. There was a note in the chest that I hadn't noticed, and I had to read it. This should definitely be a glitch since I should need to find the target location before getting any unknown clues! I haven't had another problem like this since, but I still keep an eye out. Just posting this here in case someone else runs into the same problem I did lol :)
At first, I know this is an old post, but I wanted to answer it, as I didn't find an answer that could help me.
I had the same problem. Even if I had gotten a clue from the pc and from the wall-drawing, I still had to search for the chests nearby.
In my situation, there was a chest on the left, which was hidden beneath water (so it was hard to notice). Inside it there was a letter that helped my mission to progress.
