No tutorial?
Is there no tutorial, or is it because I didn't pick "Casual"? I just got this game and I'm kinda iffy so far... I've had to Google answers twice now because trying random keys didn't fix it. (Example: Told me Q to drop stuff, and N to examine, but pressing both Q and N didn't get rid of my magnifying glass - Z did???)

And some of it's fairly elementary, but I still expected some sort of combat tutorial... It showed me how to equip a sword and didn't say anything else. I played for about 15 minutes before I found out my sword has a special attack or something. (Right-clicking did a whirlwind/deflect attack) I didn't know there was a starvation meter until the meter was very low.

I found seeds, and it told me I could plant them in tilled soil, then be watered with the appropriate tools, which I can make at a crafting table... except I don't know where a crafting table is. Is there one in my ship? I went west when the game beamed me to a planet, and this makes me wonder if there was a crafting table to the east?

The game told me to find a core thing below ground, but I wanted to explore the surface more. I saw some weird metal cylinder that was flashing so I tried to hop over to it and fell... to my death. I didn't know there was fall damage, since I'd been hopping off mountains while chopping trees before. I lost all my food, and I think all my bandages and stuff... Does this mean I now have to get past all the same monsters, without healing items? The game hasn't told me how to make healing items, or if I just find them, or what. It told me to eat food, but not how to eat food. It told me to explore underground, and recommended I get torches, but didn't tell me how to make torches - only that I needed coal.

It's just very frustrating. I thought this was going to be more like Stardew Valley with tougher combat, but it's definitely more like Minecraft. Should I just get a refund now, or does it get much easier as it goes along? Meaning, if I'm having this much difficulty now with zero explanation, will I just be screwed in the long run, or does the game start explaining itself better?

So basically, you want the game to hold your hand through all of the things that you could learn by stopping and paying attention?
Although if you really can't manage the lack of hand-holding early in the game, you should probably get a refund now since the game certainly doesn't hold your hand later in the game and especially not for any of the bosses.

What the hell are you talking about, "if I pay attention"?

I said, the game told me, "Press Q to drop items. Press N to toggle scan on/off." I pressed Q, and I pressed N, and neither dropped the thing. I did exactly what it told me to.

And how would I know my weapon had a special attack, if it doesn't tell me?

I thought the starvation meter was an XP bar at first, because again, it didn't tell me.

It told me to use a crafting table, but not where it is. In Stardew Valley, it's in one of the pause screen menus. In Minecraft, you have to find or make a workbench yourself... I think. Is there one on my ship? Is there a town somewhere? Is it in one of the menus?

All I wanted to do was find out of there was a tutorial or not, asking if I should restart on Casual or if this was the best it was gonna get. Instead you talk down to me for not knowing the controls. Thanks. And yeah, I probably will get a refund.

The story quests and SAIL text are the tutorial. The game probably expects you to check the keybinds yourself though, that would have solved most of your issues. They are in the same place you find them in pretty much every single game. Also try pressing the menu buttons on your screen to figure out what they do, because, you know, they might do stuff.

Some of your other complaints have me scratching my head, not sure if you are being serious or not. Developers have to assume most players have a touch of common sense otherwise the tutorial/popups feel too naggy or babying. Yes if you fall off a cliff you will die, that's usually what happens in most games, I've never seen a game popup a warning about that.

The tutorial is through the story and the quests you get at the begging, if you read those you won't have any problems, the more advanced stuff is for you to figure out on your own, what fun is a game if it helps you with everything :P ?

Wait; does that also mean I will get hurt if I jump into lava? Or drown if I stay underwater for too long? Next thing you know you're going to tell me I need a spacesuit to go to moonclass planets :P :P :P

Check out starbounder.org and read the "Getting Started" guide. This game has some frustrating moments, but it's worth keeping at it.

Thanks - you're the only helpful / friendly person so far. I just thought this game was going to be like Stardew Valley more than Minecraft, but I guess not - between that and the unfriendly community so far I'll probably be getting a refund.

Hey, I don't remember the controls but you can press escape and go to the options. You will find there key bindings. Check what does what. You have to craft the crafting table. Not sure, but I think it's a "C" key. You can also check the buttons in the right, left corner of the screen. I think that one of them brings the crafting menu. That should answer all or most of your questions. Good luck and have fun. :)

I will admit that it not telling you that the hunger meter is a hunger meter in the first place is mayyybe a bit of an oversight on the devs.

Also does the game not tell you how to craft right from the start? if it doesnt then ill agree with the basis of this post, cause atleast minecraft is like 'press e to open inventory'. I just havent played in a while so... An instance of 'press C to open crafting menu' should be at the begining of the game for sure.

So yeah if starbound was the first game of its type ever played by somone, it may be very well quite confusing at first. Its just that usually people pick up games like starbound after playing more popular ones like minecraft and were looking for more XD

Now that i think about it, how the heck would someone with no knoledge of minecraft ever figure out how to play the game if they didnt google it? they never tell you what the recipe for pickaxes/etc are outright do they?

The game should be fine once you get the hang of the keybindings and UI, as that was what was holding you up it seems, good luck if you keep the game. Sorry about the rest of the buttheads in the chat lol

@King The game didn't tell me how to do much of anything; rather, it gave vague indications. Like it said, "You're hungry. Here's your hunger bar. Eat something." and it took me a minute to figure out how to eat... I had to click and drag to the top left corner. Not sure if that's the normal way to do it.

I only played Minecraft for a few minutes at a friend's house, but I'm pretty sure the tutorial talked you through building a house, a bed, and a workbench. Then the workbench had blueprints or whatever for other stuff.

I would agree with this if there wasn't a big button on the screen that you can click to open the crafting interface. I find it hard to believe anyone loads up a game and plays for any length of time without looking at the onscreen buttons. Ignoring the keybinds and figuring stuff out on your own I can see (complaining about not being able to figure them out on your own is a bit silly). Ignoring the menu buttons though? Not sure if serious.

Heh, no. Minecraft doesn't have any tutorial whatsoever. It has the "Press E to open inventory" message and that's where it stops. There are no "blueprints" either, without mods you have to either guess recipes by placing random objects in various shapes in a crafting grid and hope it leads to something, or you have to look at a wiki.

5 second Google search of "minecraft tutorial"
"The Console Edition has a tutorial..."
http://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Console_Edition_tutorial

"The tutorial walks the player through:
Chopping wood
Game controls
Creating planks and a crafting table
Inventory use
Creating basic tools
Using a furnace
Building a shelter
Surviving the night
Sprinting
Jumping
Hunger/Health
Other tutorials for items such as beds, Nether portals, boats, pistons, and fishing rods will pop up, but are not part of the main tutorial."

If the community wasn't so friendly. Then why would all these people show up, only in attempt to help you, be a little thankful.
