Its better to play vanilla until you finish all the quests and missions in the vanilla than switch to other mods but make sure to delete your universe (Except for your outpost and planet bases.) (You can use the cordinate button to find any planet base cordinates then go into storage and delete everything but the file with the planet cords in the name and the file that has the outpost progress.) Its better to download one or two large mods at a time so you can not have too much to do at once and so you can keep track of what adds what.

Starbound's plenty empty without it. It's a necessity, in my opinion. But just the same, it shoves a whole truckload on your shoulders right from the get go. It'll break your back unless you familiarize yourself with the base game to a mid to late point. person has the right idea; take it slow and steady.

Start with vanilla (always). It's a fun game even without mods. When you get bored with it, THEN you add stuff. No reason to do so first.

Personally, I avoid FU in general. I'd rather not have to ask every single mod page I ever become interested in if they're FU compatible. And a good portion of its content can be found as external mods anyway.

Frackin universe adds the scientific exploration and examination aspect to the game that a lot of fanon and early builds contained, its very fun if you enjoy setting up a lab and playing scientist. Learning vanilla would probably be the best to get a grip on most of the mechanics, but if you add frackin after you start a world it will wipe all your data.

I'm quite fond of Frackin' Universe, but it does add quite a bit of complexity that might be overwhelming if you're not already at least a bit familiar with how things in Starbound normally work. It's not unsurmountable, especially if you've ever played Minecraft with a modpack and had to learn how all their systems work together, since this is a similar feel.
Well it depend on what's good about the mod, what's not so good about the mod, and making compromises. Frackin' Universe adds a large amount of cool creatures, planets, and the new intro mission is pretty cool. On the other hand, I'm not very fond of the crafting system. So, I make a choice. Do I want balanced gameplay, or the Atropus Planet? Do I want Poptops with Flutes, or Simple EPPs. See? You have to measure the Pros and Cons with this sort of thing.

With the state of FU as it is right now I would definatly reccoment it for a first playthough, it adds a lot of depth and explination to the world and makes it all seem a lot more real, while it can complicate some of vanilla aspects and make things more challenging its easy enough to avoid and playthrough the main quest all together.

youll likely want to use it for a second playthough but then your starting from scratch again as you wont be able to use the same characters after its installed, even if you finish vanilla starbound within FU and decide your finished with it having FU installed gives you good reason to come back to your character and experience some true End Game content and explore the depth of the scientific aspect of Starbound

but it is a big enough of a change to the core files that you'll want to think about it before commiting.

I play Vanilla. Some people will only (and can only) play with FU enabled. All depends on you.

If you're a new player, vanilla starbound has a large amount of content to explore & experience.

You can still start a new game with mods once you've played through the game on vanilla - then you'll know what the base game contains and can better differentiate what is vanilla and what comes from a mod.

Frackin' Universe adds an overwhelming load of stuff on top of vanilla and significantly changes the way progression is made.

if you are not sure and dont want to loose your progress, try enabling the starbound unstable version. i have both normal starbound and unstable and am using unstable atm for frakkin. it does work now since unstable is realy not unstable anymore (lol)
just remember to also install the mods it tells you to (it now needs the Xbawks character extender to function since it added playable races like slime and fenerox) and i would reccomend also adding the frakkin races mod if you like playing survival or hardcore as there is a character race designed especialy for that style of play.

since PC updates of starbound are paused for them to make sure the console versions are up to speed with us, its handy to have 2 versions lol, tho you cant subscribe via workshop to things for unstable and have to manualy add them (when you try, the game downloads the mods to your regular starbound, this is why you have to manualy instal for unstable) but other than that, i havent had many issues with unstable and mods.
