Looks like my saves were in a folder called "giraffe_storage"
Can those be migrated?

(I did not test this):
Try making a new character and go to the first planet. Then, make a copy of your backup and name it the name of the world the new character is in. See if that works.
PS: The "name" is the number string on "storage\universe" .world
But that's not necessarily a bad thing. With how much that's changed, you'd be better off experiencing it fresh anyway.
The files basically had a change in them which made it appear there has been a wipe; but in fact it is just compatibility problems. This happened before going from Koala to Girraffe versions. I'd say that is too long ago for it to work, and I don't think anyone did a conversion. There were lots of changes since that time, as well additions.
You will most likely have to start over. Of course you could use the admin mode to get quite a bit equipment back. Worlds on the other hand are lost. So all that can be done is to rebuild... What I had to do when 1.0 came out.
