growing your crops & farming your food - is it 100% necessary?
playing on survival, is it absolutely necessary to build your own farm and grow crops etc. to get enough food? or is it viable just to keep exploring and buying/finding and cooking your food?

nope you can just buy canned foods at the outpost if you want and they dont spoil afaik. though making a farm for the plants is kinda fun for me :).

for some reason there's not canned foods available in the infinity express... guess i have to wait for them to appear or something?

The only thing I've made so far is a farm/garden. I'm struggling to make a decent building, but it's rather fun finding plants and tending field.

Thats uhh really weird they should be available right at the start i think. Or maybe i remembered wrong becasue i started a new chracter with after my other one have adavanced a bit in the story. Just check periodically i guess. Cos thats where i've been getting canned foods when i'm desperate.

Alternatively you could build a house with the appropriate furniture and get a chef who sells food for you .

To be honest, I kinda stopped being interested in farming and generally don't farm much, with two exceptions, although both of which require the kitchen counter, which requires you to upgrade your intentors table once.

Chocolate. Take any coca seeds you can find, and plant those at your home base, because chocolate lasts a long time and you can quickly build up quite a collection of it. If you want to carry more food than your inventory allows, then carry stacks of coca pods and a kitchen counter.

Alien Fruit Juice. Once you're able to land on a mutated/alien planet, cut down trees until one of them drops Alien Fruit. Keep those saplings, and plant them near your home farm. Keep planting and harvesting alien trees and the amount of fruit available per planting will grow quickly, and you'll get a lot of Alien Fruit. Make Alien Fruit Juice at the Kitchen Counter.

The thing that makes Alien Fruit Juice so great is that aside from being easy to make massive amounts of it, drinking it will give you low gravity.

Chocolate has a decent selling price for something you can just make massive amounts of.
Alien Fruit Juice however, is really cheap, despite being magical parkour juice.

I only keep a farm for emergencies or in case I need to do food quests.

It's a really nice source of cash if you know what to make, just harvest every now and then in between doing other stuff.

plant in your ships someting like 5x banana and 5x grapes, and make ape grapes. you never have to replant them so its easy food gathering.. And rice is the perfect emergency food to take with you as it stacks. or plant choclate. it also stakcs but you will require a counter to prpare it and not a campfire.
