How do I improve my mech?

You find better mech part blueprints randomly generated throughout the universe, you construct them, and you apply them.

Space encounters. And the mech construction is at the outpodt mech station...

On your navigation screen look to hostile ships and space anomalies. Clean them and loot all the crates and chests. You will randomly recieve some blueprints and learn to craft new mech parts. After that you can make this parts in mech crafting station and install it to your mech. Sometimes you can obtain blueprints from space monsters too and also you can do quests from proffesor Akkagi and he will give you new blueprints as a reward sometimes.
(space encounters also give you this salvage parts from loot that you need to build most of the mech parts)

Dr. Akaggy (The Penguin) also gives you a quest that unlocks you a better mech weapon.

Improvign the mech will need you to find lootable crates and destroyable containers in the anomalies or stations/ships. As well as a PLENTY of these required components to craft them. And droprates are pretty crap, so be prepared to spending a load of hours doing the same stuff over and over.
