How do I Load a Saved Game?
I have no idea how to load a previous game. In the game, I click Start, click my character, and I'm always right back to graduation morning, waking up. All my previous work
is gone.

On the game's opening screen, I just see the options Start, Join, Options, Quit. No "Load" or "Continue," as in Load Previous Game. Most games have a list of previous saves. Minecraft will list previous Worlds and they are always in the state you left them in.

If I click Join, I'm given the option to join a server. Not what I was wanting. If I click Start, I see my character, but when I click him, I'm back at the very beginning of the game, waking up for graduation.

I've read stuff here about backing up previous games in your Startbound/storage/player folder, and I can back stuff up, but how would I re-load a previous game? That's different than the "restore backup" posts, right? I just want to Continue the game I "saved and quit" an hour ago.

Thanks for reading!

You just need to press "Start Game" and select your character.
Maybe there is corruption somewhere in the game.
The best would be to make a clean reinstall.

Go to: Steam\SteamApps\common\Starbound
Erase the storage folder.

Uninstall the game, reinstall.

Is the beginning Graduation part of the game where you wake up, go to graduation, the attack by the giant monster happens, and you try to escape.... Is that something that you get past and then your character saves your progression automatically?

Okay. I figured it out. The Graduation ceremony/Beginning/tutorial has to be finished. You can't save during it. Once I played it through and got on my first planet, then my character saved my work up to that point and I could "save and quit" and then Start again with my character and pick up WHERE I LEFT OFF.

Thanks for the suggestions!

yea... starbound has two save folders. One for world files and one for your character. You're character saves progress for missions done, and the state of your ship, as well as inventory etc.... World files including your outpost, save structures and storage and unlock states, per world / location. Even if you make a new character the changes made to your universe by other characters still exist in your game. Meaning depending on what you want to revert, you need to back up either your character folder or your universe folder / individual worldfiles. If you're having trouble figureing out which world file is what, their file name is based on the coordinate location of the planet. Meaning you can either reverse look up a planet you want to get back to or use in game coordinates to find the right file.

Just trying to be clear. you are complaining that you had to start the prologue over when you didnt even finish it? i mean that thing is short af.

This is "slightly" poor game design or UI design. The UI should never lie to you. If you press the save and quit button it should do exactly that. If saving is not allowed in the prologue then the game should at least warn you in game that saving is not allowed in the tutorial. Or at least, change the button name to quit and lose your progress.

Sure the prologue should be very easy and usually almost impossible to not finish without dying. But in real life some people might need to stop and do something in real life and want to continue later
